Asparagus and the Cretan Bowl Diet…

This Asparagus Page is from the Cretan Bowl Diet website that offers weight loss tips and slimming advice and information.

Based on the Cretan diet and cousin of the Mediterranean diet the diet plan can help you achieve your healthy shape and weight.

Asparagus

Asparagus
ASPARAGUS
Asparagus not only tastes delicious it is also incredibly nutritious. It contains no fat, cholesterol or sodium and is rich in vitamin C iron and potassium. Asparagus also contains more vitamin B9 folic acid than any other vegetable. Vitamin B9 has forms named Folate and Folic Acid. Folate occurs naturally in fresh foods, whereas Folic Acid is the synthetic form found in supplements.

The body needs Folate to produce red blood cells, as well as components of the nervous system. It helps maintaining normal brain function, and is a critical part of spinal fluid. Folic Acid is vital for proper cell growth and development of the embryo, so it is important for women to have enough Folate/Folic Acid in their bodies both before and during pregnancy.

I love Asparagus but unfortunately it isn’t cultivated here on Crete. A wild asparagus variety grows wild here on the Greek Island of Crete at roadsides and edges of fields. Local women collect this wonderful vegetable and prize it as a very health giving vegetable.

Asparagus as an Aphrodisiac

APHRODISIAC
The asparagus has somewhat of a reputation as an aphrodisiac and has been named the vegetable version of Viagra.

According to the ancient Greek botanist Theophrastus, asparagus was the favourite food of the gods giving them strength and virility.

The 16th century Arabian writer Sheikh Nefzaoui wrote about the aphrodisiac qualities of asparagus in his work The Perfumed Garden for the Soul's Recreation.

Basically his work The Perfumed Garden took the form of a sex manual in which he stated:

"He who boils asparagus and then fries them in fat, and then pours upon them the yolks of eggs will grow very strong and find in it a stimulant for his amorous desires."

In a later work the 17th century English physician and herbalist Nicholas Culpepper, 1616-1654, listed the virtues and uses of asparagus as an aphrodisiac stating it "Stirreth up bodily lust in Man or Woman."

The act of eating asparagus, traditionally always with fingers, is an extremely sensuous experience and can get you in the mood for afters!
