Blueberries and the Cretan Bowl Diet…

This Blueberries Page is from the Cretan Bowl Diet website that offers slimming advice and information to help you lose weight.

Based on the Cretan diet and cousin of the Mediterranean diet the diet plan can help you achieve your healthy shape and weight.

Blueberries are native to North America and are therefore not grown here on the Greek Island of Crete. Nor are they easily available.

If they are sold here they are very pricey because of the importing costs. That's a shame because I love blueberries and have included them on the Cretan Bowl Diet food list.

In recent years the blueberry has been hailed a superfood as scientists have discovered many health benefits from eating blueberries. Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants which are linked to anti aging.

The claims of good health and anti-ageing benefits of the blueberry have been the source of many studies. And all in all it looks as though the benefits have not been overplayed.

The pigment that makes the blueberries blue is called anthocyanin, (from the Greek words for plant and blue), and is an antioxidant. The deeper colour of the fruit, the higher the levels of anthocyanin.

The blueberry is also bursting with vitamins, minerals and wonderful flavour too.

Blueberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

BLUEBERRIES CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Vitamin C is an important vitamin in that it plays a significant role as an antioxidant, thereby protecting body tissue from the damage of oxidation.

Antioxidants act to protect your cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of the body’s metabolism. Free radicals can cause cell damage that may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Vitamin E is important as an antioxidant, thereby protecting body tissue from the damage of oxidation. It is important in the formation of red blood cells and the use of Vitamin K.

The blueberry certainly finds its way on the Cretan Bowl Diet food list as it is low in calories and packed with vitamins and can help you lose weight.
