Cabbage
 CABBAGE |
Cabbage, both red and green are packed with vitamins and minerals and are grown to enormous sizes here on the Greek Island of Crete!
They are incredibly cheap and plentiful. Luckily I love cabbage and we have it raw in salads or cooked to accompany dinner.
Cabbages are an excellent source of Vitamin K.
Vitamin K is fat-soluble and plays a major role in blood clotting. It regulates blood calcium levels and activates proteins involved in bone health.
Cabbage also contain Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B9 and Vitamin C.
Cabbage also contains Calcium, Iron, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium and Zinc.
Greek Mythology & Cabbages
The cabbage has been around for thousands of years and has been used as a food and in folklore medicine. The cabbage found its place in Greek mythology because of the fact that vines do not prosper when cabbages are planted close by in a vineyard.
 CABBAGES |
In Greek myth King Lycurgus of the Edones in Thrace (Central Greece), was totally opposed to cult of Dionysus, the god of wine.
Drunken revellers and female devotees of Dionysus named Maenads threatened to establish themselves in Thrace.
King Lycurgus imprisoned the band of merry makers and tried to arrest Dionysus.
In revenge Dionysus drove Lycurgus mad, giving him hallucinations. Not in his right mind, Lycurgus mistook his son for a vine, (sacred plant of Dionysus) and hacked him to death.
On realising what he had done Lycurgus wept, and from the tears that fell to the ground the first cabbages grew.
CABBAGE CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT |
Later in Roman times the Roman writer and naturalist believed cabbage to be a hangover cure, amongst many other things and in his work Natural History, A Selection notes:
"...as cabbage is an enemy of the vine, men say it counteracts wine and consequently, if taken in food beforehand, prevents intoxication. If taken after drinking it neutralises the effects."
Cabbages certainly find their way on the Cretan Bowl Diet food list as they are low in calories and packed with vitamins and can help you lose weight.
Eat them raw by shredding them and mixing with your salads for lunch or cook them to go with your dinner.
